24/7 storm response

High winds, lightning strikes, saturated soils, ice accumulation, and structural defects can all contribute to sudden tree failure. In many cases, homeowners do not realize a tree was compromised until a major branch breaks or the entire tree collapses.

At Tree Care Pros, emergency tree care begins with understanding why the failure occurred. Our ISA Certified Arborists evaluate the biological, structural, and environmental factors contributing to damage so property owners can make informed decisions regarding mitigation, preservation, or removal.

Emergency Response

Why Trees Fail During Storm Events

Tree failure rarely occurs without warning. Most failures develop over many years as structural defects, root problems, decay, and environmental stress weaken the tree’s ability to withstand loading forces.

During storms, wind places tremendous stress on trunks, scaffold branches, and root systems.

Healthy trees are often capable of flexing and distributing these forces. Trees with hidden defects, decay, included bark, root damage, or poor structure are significantly more likely to experience catastrophic failure.

Common contributors to storm-related tree failures include:

Understanding the underlying cause of failure helps prevent similar incidents elsewhere on the property.

  • Internal wood decay
  • Root system decline
  • Soil saturation
  • Included bark unions
  • Co-dominant stems
  • Construction damage
  • Previous storm injuries
  • Excessive canopy weight
  • Drought stress
  • Insect and disease pressure
Safety & Risk

Emergency Tree Risk Assessment

Not every damaged tree requires removal.

Following a storm, our ISA Certified Arborists perform a systematic evaluation of the tree’s structural condition, remaining canopy, root system stability, and likelihood of future failure.

We evaluate:

Structural Integrity

Large cracks, stem separations, compromised branch unions, and trunk failures can significantly reduce the tree’s ability to support future loads.

Root System Stability

A tree’s root system provides anchorage. When roots are damaged, decayed, severed, or growing in compacted soils, the likelihood of uprooting increases substantially.

Remaining Canopy Health

The amount of healthy foliage remaining after a storm often determines whether recovery is possible.

Targets and Occupancy

Trees located near homes, garages, driveways, pedestrian areas, schools, businesses, and public infrastructure require special consideration because of the potential consequences of failure.

Emergency Response

Storm Damage and Root Failure

Many homeowners focus on the visible damage in the canopy while overlooking the condition of the root system.

Root failures are among the most dangerous types of tree failures because they often occur without obvious warning signs. Saturated soils, prolonged drought, construction activities, trenching, grade changes, and root decay pathogens can significantly weaken anchorage.

When soils become heavily saturated, the weight of the canopy may exceed the root system’s ability to maintain stability, leading to uprooting events during periods of high wind.

Our evaluations include root flare inspections, soil condition assessments, and identification of factors that may compromise anchorage.

Safety & Risk

Emergency Tree Pruning and Hazard Mitigation

In many situations, emergency pruning can reduce risk while preserving the tree.

Strategic pruning may be used to:

All pruning recommendations follow ANSI A300 standards and ISA Best Management Practices.

The objective is not simply to remove damaged material, but to improve structural stability while preserving as much healthy canopy as possible.

  • Remove broken branches
  • Reduce excessive end weight
  • Eliminate hanging limbs
  • Improve canopy balance
  • Reduce future loading forces
  • Improve clearance from structures
Our Approach

Lightning Damage to Trees

Lightning strikes can create significant internal damage that is not immediately visible from the ground.

Electrical energy traveling through a tree may cause:

Some lightning-damaged trees recover successfully, while others experience progressive decline over several years.

Professional evaluation is critical to determine long-term viability.

  • Bark separation
  • Cambial death
  • Vascular disruption
  • Root injury
  • Secondary insect infestations
  • Fungal colonization
Tree Removal

Emergency Tree Removal

When structural damage exceeds acceptable risk levels, removal may become necessary.

Tree Care Pros approaches removal as a last resort after evaluating preservation options, risk mitigation opportunities, and long-term management alternatives.

Conditions that commonly warrant emergency removal include:

Our goal is to protect people and property while making recommendations supported by arboricultural science.

  • Major trunk failures
  • Severe root plate instability
  • Extensive structural cracking
  • Catastrophic storm damage
  • Trees impacting structures
  • Immediate public safety hazards
Our Approach

Preventing Future Tree Emergencies

Many emergency situations can be prevented through proactive tree management.

Routine inspections by an ISA Certified Arborist often identify problems before they become failures.

Preventive services may include:

Healthy trees with strong structure are significantly more resilient during severe weather events.

  • Tree risk assessments
  • Structural pruning
  • Plant healthcare programs
  • Root flare excavation
  • Soil aeration
  • Disease management
  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Cabling and bracing systems

Our emergency tree care service

DFW storms are unpredictable and brutal. A 70-mph straight-line wind can drop a 60-year oak in a single gust, and the calls we get the morning after a big front are some of the most stressful we handle. Our promise: you call, an arborist or dispatcher answers, and we have a crew on your property fast.

Emergency tree work is genuinely different from scheduled work. Trees in failure can shift unpredictably. Power lines are often involved. Insurance documentation needs to happen before debris is moved. We handle all of it — and we don't price-gouge in emergencies. Storm-response pricing is published and honest.

When you need this

What emergency tree care solves

Tree on a house

First priority everywhere we work — we stabilize the tree, tarp the roof if needed, and remove it safely.

Tree on a vehicle

Documented removal so your auto/homeowners insurance has what it needs to process the claim.

Tree across a road or driveway

Same-day clearance to get you back to using your property.

Hung-up limbs (widow-makers)

Large limbs caught in the canopy that could fall at any time. Rigged down safely from above.

Split or partially failed trees

A split co-dominant stem is one of the most dangerous tree conditions. We can sometimes cable and save them; often we need to remove them.

Our process

How we approach emergency tree care

1

Triage call

Tell us the situation. We prioritize life-safety, then structures, then property.

2

Dispatch

Crew arrives with a clear scope, the right equipment, and an arborist on point.

3

Documentation

Photos, measurements, scope of damage — everything your insurance adjuster will need.

4

Stabilize first

If the tree is still on a structure, we stabilize before cutting. Sometimes that means temporary cabling or a crane.

5

Safe removal

Section by section, rigged down. We minimize secondary damage to the structure beneath.

6

Tarp & cleanup

Temporary roof tarp if needed, debris hauled, you have what you need to call your contractor and insurance.

Pricing — straight answer

Emergency Tree Care cost in DFW

Typical Range
$300–$5,000

What drives the price

  • Time of day / day of week
  • Severity of damage
  • Power line involvement
  • Crane requirement
  • Insurance vs. self-pay (we work with both)
Mistakes to avoid

What you should NOT do

  • DO NOT touch a tree that's contacting a power line. Call Oncor (or your utility) first.
  • Don't move debris off your car or house before your insurance adjuster has photographed it — unless safety requires it.
  • Don't sign a 'we'll handle your insurance for you' contract from a door-to-door storm crew. Most are out-of-state contractors who disappear after the cleanup is paid.
  • Don't pay cash with no receipt to whoever shows up first after a storm.
After the work

What to expect

Tree off the structure, debris cleared, photos and a documented scope of work in your hands for the insurance claim. We don't repair the roof or rebuild fences — that's a contractor's job — but everything tree-related is handled.

If you wait

The risks of not addressing this

A partially-failed tree often fails completely within hours or days. Limbs hung up in canopies routinely drop in subsequent storms or even calm weather. The cost of waiting is usually the cost of a more expensive removal AND additional damage.

FAQ

Emergency Tree Care questions answered

Is it really 24/7?

Yes. Storm response especially is round-the-clock from spring through fall. Off-peak emergencies may have a slightly longer response window but we respond.

Do I call you or my insurance company first?

If life or property is in immediate danger, call us (or 911 for life). For non-life-threatening damage, call us to stabilize, then call your insurance. We help with the documentation.

Do you bill my insurance directly?

Sometimes — depends on your carrier. Most often the homeowner pays us and gets reimbursed by insurance with the documentation we provide.

Will my homeowners insurance cover this?

Generally: yes for damage to insured structures and for removal of the portion of the tree on the structure. Coverage varies, so check your policy.

What if power lines are involved?

Call your utility first (Oncor: 1-888-313-4747). Once the line is de-energized or contained, we can do the tree work.

How fast can you actually be on-site?

Tree-on-house within 1–3 hours typically during storms. Other emergencies within a few hours, usually same day.

Do you do tarping?

Yes — temporary roof tarp is included on tree-on-house jobs to prevent water damage until your roofer arrives.

Do you price-gouge after storms?

No. Storm rates are slightly higher than scheduled work because of after-hours crew costs, but we publish our pricing and don't change it based on desperation.
