Grinding vs. full stump removal
Grinding is faster, cheaper, and far less destructive than excavating a stump. A grinder reduces the stump to chips a few inches below grade, leaving the root system to decompose naturally underground. Full extraction (digging the root ball out) is rarely necessary and tears up your yard — we recommend it only when you are building a foundation or pool on the exact spot.
How deep we grind
Standard grinding takes the stump 4–6 inches below grade — enough to sod or lay turf over. If you plan to replant a tree or build there, we grind 8–12 inches and remove larger structural roots. We will ask what you intend to do with the spot before we start so the depth matches your plan.
Surface roots & the whole footprint
Many Rhome stumps have surface roots radiating across the lawn. We can grind those flush too, so you are not left mowing over knuckles of root. For large old trees, we map the surface-root footprint with you before grinding.
Locating utilities first
Before any grinding we have underground utilities located — grinders cut several inches into the soil and can hit shallow irrigation, low-voltage lighting, gas, or cable lines. We call 811 for public utilities and flag private lines (sprinkler, invisible dog fence, landscape lighting) with you to avoid a costly surprise.
Cleanup, fill & replanting
Grinding produces a pile of chips and a depression. We can haul the grindings off or leave them as mulch for your beds. The hole is backfilled with grindings or clean topsoil and tamped so it settles level. If you are replanting, do not plant a new tree directly in the old ground — we will advise on spacing and soil prep for the Rhome site.
