Right tree, right place
The biggest planting decision is species. For long-lived shade in Watauga we steer owners toward bur oak, cedar elm, Texas red oak (with chlorosis management), chinquapin oak, or pecan on deep soil; for smaller spaces, redbud, Texas mountain laurel, or Mexican plum. We avoid the problem trees — Bradford pear, ash (emerald ash borer), and generic big-box species — and match the tree to your space, sun, and soil.
Why DFW clay changes everything
Our alkaline clay (pH 7.5–8.2) locks up iron and drains slowly. That rules out acid-loving species, demands wide (not deep) planting holes to encourage lateral roots, and means we often amend and mulch rather than fight the native soil. Planting an unsuited species here guarantees a lifetime of chlorosis treatments.
Correct depth & the root flare
The single most common planting mistake we diagnose in Watauga is planting too deep. The root flare — where the trunk widens into the roots — must sit at or just above grade. We remove excess nursery soil and burlap from the flare, set the tree slightly high to allow for settling, and never pile soil or mulch against the trunk.
Staking, mulching & water
We stake only when needed (and remove stakes after the first year so the trunk develops strength), mulch in a wide ring that starts a few inches off the trunk, and give you a specific first-year watering schedule — deep and infrequent, not daily sprinkler splashes. The first two years of watering decide whether a Watauga tree establishes.
Establishment & aftercare
A newly-planted tree is not established until its roots integrate with the surrounding soil — about two years here. We offer follow-up visits to check moisture, correct staking, and catch problems early, plus optional deep-root fertilization once the tree is established to push healthy growth.
